Anglo-American Telegraph Co. Ltd
Registered 1866. One of the most important telegraph companies that included amongst its directors Baron d’Erlanger, Daniel Gooch, Baron Reuter and Cyrus Field. Formed after the loss of the 1865 Atlantic Cable, the company used the S.S/Great Eastern to lay the main cable between Ireland and Newfoundland. Several cables followed and 4 of them were still operational by the time Western Union’s lease came to an end and the company was wound up in 1968.
