Guards Boat Club Limited
The club, originally founded in 1865, was for Brigade of Guards officers to relax and enjoy boating on the Thames at Maidenhead. There was a large clubhouse with ballroom, dining room and 12 bedrooms. Finances were strained by the 1920’s and the club extended membership to Ladies, building an annexe for their use for which this debenture loan was raised. The club was famously used for the setting of the classic Ealing Studios film Kind Hearts and Coronets,
in 1949. Regattas and Balls were continued, some of which attended by Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret, however the club had become uneconomic to run and was closed in the 1960’s. The area has been restored and developed in more recent years.
