Description
The company was created in 1825 as a state-owned shipping yard, named after Tsar Alexander I. It was located alongside the Neva River and it was this company that built the first Russian steamship in 1827 and submarine in 1838. From 1843 onward, the company also started to produce railroad material, in particular for the Nikolai Railroad (rails, locomotives, carriages). The company become a limited company in 1879 with a capital of 1.5 million roubles. Capital was increased to 2.5 million roubles in 1897 and to 5 million roubles in 1899.
