Description
The railway was founded in 1868 by Prince Peter Trubezkoj and cotton producers Ivan Vargunin and Roman Poplavskij. The railroad provided a cross link in the railroad network around Moscow. It ran from Lichoslavl (on the Moscow-St. Petersburg Railroad) southwest via Torzhok to Vyazma. As such, it formed part of the railroad route from St. Petersburg to the Crimea and Brest. As it remained a single-track railroad, it lost its importance although it continues to be used today, mainly by freight trains.
