Maxwell Land Grant and Railway Company
A company of English and Dutch investors who purchased the Maxwell Land Grant from the Maxwell family following a survey in 1867 stating it consisted of 1.7 million acres of land. Congress later ruled that the grant only contained 97,000 acres and the remaining land was opened to public settlement. Legal disputes continued into the 1880’s and finally the U.S. Supreme Court confirmed the original claim to 1.7million acres, this leading to the company evicting thousands of settlers which ended in the Stonewall Valley War of 1888.
