Miami Exporting Company
Incorporated in April 1803 for the chief purpose of exporting produce to New Orleans. It is debated whether banking was originally intended at all; however, the charter did allow for the company to issue notes payable to the bearer. This opened the door for what were essentially banking transactions and made the Miami Exporting Company Ohio’s first bank. The banking department was so successful the company opened an office in Cincinnati for banking exclusively. By 1807, it operated solely as a bank and was very successful except for a period from 1822-1834 where the it witnessed various internal struggles. The company closed in 1843 when the state did not renew its’ charter.
