Kronstadt, near St. Petersburg, was the base of the Tsarist Baltic Sea fleet. The Russian revolution started here in 1917 when the sailors on the cruiser ‘Aurora’ mutinied. The citizens of Kronstadt supported them and the revolution spread from that incident.
