Founded in Scotland as locomotive agents but in 1892 they bought the California locomotive works in Stoke on Trent belonging to Hartley, Arnoux and Fanning and proceeded to build their own locomotives. These narrow gauge engines found their way to all corners of the world and many are still running or have been preserved. Mitchell, designer of ther Spitfire, did his apprenticeship at this company.
