City and South London Railway Company
Incorporated on 25th July 1890.
Previously incorporated in 1884 by special acts of Parliament. The first underground electric railway in the world. It was originally intended to run on a cable-operated system, but electric railways elsewhere were proving successful and electric power enabled a much larger underground network to grow. In 1887 the company was authorised to extend, and in 1890 the lines opened for traffic and the name was changed to the City and South London Railway. Further extensions were also made, and continued into the early 1900’s.
Total Capital £600,000 in shares of £10 each. Loans of £175,000 in debentures. New capital in 1890 of £200,000 and loans £50,000.
