Wigan Gas Light Undertaking
Formed by Act of Parliament in 1822 to construct gasworks between the Leeds and Liverpool Canal and Chapel Lane. Gas supply was erratic but improved as more households converted from candle to gas. By 1860 demand was such that the company could not cope so the Wigan Gas Company was incorporated to take over and improve the works in 1861.
