Records where place of business is India
India, which included present day Bangladesh and Pakistan, was under British rule until it attained independence on 15th August 1947. Until its nationalisation in 1858 the East India Company governed much of the country. The East India Company’s Indian possessions, powers and army were taken over by the British government in 1858 pursuant to the “Government of India Act”.
Burma was also a province of India until 1st April 1937 when it became a British colony under separate administration before its independence on 4th January 1948.
There were a number of “Princely States” in India under British protection with local hereditary rulers.
Finally there were small colonial territories in India ruled by Portugal until 1961 (Goa) and France until 1954 (Pondicherry).
Nearly all the certificates in this catalogue are from the period from the end of the East India Company’s rule until Indian independence. Companies operating in India were incorporated either in Great Britain or in India under its Companies Acts of 1866, 1882 or 1913. Many Princely States adopted their own Companies Acts based on British companies legislation.
The vast majority of Indian share certificates are in the English language but we have also come across certificates in Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi and Urdu.
Textiles is by far the biggest theme in Indian scripophily based on the number of different certificates seen. Other important sectors include Gold Mining, Banking, Railways, Tea Plantations and Coal Mining.
