Description
The bank was formed in 1885 to offer low-cost loans to the Russian landed nobility on mortgages of their estates. In 1900, this bank granted credits of 660 million roubles while the corresponding bank for the peasants granted 70 million roubles. With the acceleration of the transfer of land from the nobility to the farmers (perhaps better phrased as ‘rural bourgeoisie’, not the average farmer), the issuance of new loans by the State Noble Land Bank slowed down. By 1914,the outstanding long-term loans amounted to 894 million roubles which was about the same amount of the money lent by the agrarian banks. After the 1917 Revolution, the State Noble Land Bank was liquidated.
