Opened in 1875, this luxury hotel in St. Petersburg was designed by Italian Carlo Rossi in Nouveau Baroque style, allegedly at the request of Tsar Alexander I. It was updated at the turn of the century in Art Nouveau style by Swedish architect Fyodor Lidval but after the revolution was used as a hospital and Government offices until 1924, when it became a hotel again. It was completely renovated in 1991 and since 2015, it operates as the Belmond Grand Hotel Europe and is classified as an historical monument.
