The company was founded in 1896 in the village of Mytishchi (today part of the Moscow Oblast) to manufacture railcars for the Russian North Railway. Initial capital was 1,500,000 roubles in shares of 125 roubles. In 1912, capital was increased to 3,600,000 roubles (from 3,000,000 roubles) in shares of 125 roubles.

Description
Originally founded 1896 with a capital of 1,5 mln. rbls in the village of Mytishchi (today part of the Moscow Oblast) to manufacture railcars, first for the Russian North Railway. Tramways and snowplows for Moscow have been produced since 1903, electric passenger trains since 1929 and metro-cars since 1934. During WWII, self-propelled guns, military tractors and other military material were produced. In 1947, production of dump trucks was started. The company is however best known for its subway cars, which have been deployed in nearly every metro system of the Soviet Union (including the Moscow metro), as well as in Budapest, Prague, Sofia and Warsaw. The company is today known as Metrowagonmash and still is the leading manufacturer of cars for metro systems in Eastern Europe.
