Johannesburg Athletic Club Limited
Incorporated in 1909 in the Transvaal by Rufus Naylor as a professional club. Ground had been acquired on the corner of End and Main Street and ‘the Stadium’ was built and opened in the following year. It relied on gambling for much of its income. Naylor (1882-1939) was a sporting entrepreneur and gambler. After building the Stadium he also acquired cinemas and theatres, managing African Theatres Trust. Accused of bribery during the Johannesburg council elections but acquitted. Ran a scam in 1930 selling shares on lottery tickets.
