A line running 26 miles between the towns, opened in 1873 by the London and North Western and Midland Railways (vested jointly in these companies). Both companies had previously promoted opposing schemes to enter the Leicestershire coalfields.
Passed to the London, Midland and Scottish Group in 1923.
