Great Northern Railway Company
Incorporated on 26th June 1846.
A line to run 186 miles from London to York, formed out of the amalgamation of the London and York (as the scheme was originally promoted) and the Direct Northern Railway (its competitor). It was extended and took over a number of lines along its route, and eventually formed a large part of the London and North Eastern Railway at grouping.
Original capital £5,600,000 in shares of £25 each. Loans of £1,800,000. Authorised capital by 1890 £29,950,337 and loans of £9,436,325.
