Liberator Permanent Building & Investment Society
Formed in 1868 by Jabez Spencer Balfour. It became the largest society in the country by the 1890s acquiring funds from its many temperance and non-conformist customers. Balfour formed other companies in the building and land sectors to work with the society and by the 1880’s most mortgages were to finance speculative developments by these companies. He also formed a bank which collapsed in 1892 closely followed by his other companies. The Liberator also collapsed in 1892 which led to new laws governing such societies.
