London and Bristol Railway Company
Incorporated on 31st August 1835
Built as two separate broad gauge lines (avoiding some of the opposition for the scheme) and engineered by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the lines were joined together before the full London to Bristol route opened in 1841 under the name of the Great Western Railway. Lines were converted to standard gauge in 1892 as were all others forming the Great Western network.
