The theatre was commissioned by D’Oyly Carte and was opened in 1891 as the Royal English Opera House. It still stands, much unaltered and dominates Cambridge Circus in central London. Sold to this company in 1893 as a Variety Theatre and also screened films from 1897. Had a succession of owners including, more recently, Andrew Lloyd Webber , since 1983. Les Miserables was performed there from 1985 to 2004. Lloyd Webber sold to Nimax Theatres in 2012.
