South Devon Railway Company
Incorporated on 4th July 1844.
An extension of the Bristol and Exeter Railway into Plymouth, built in the broad gauge. The line ran on the ‘atmospheric system’ on one section (which proved un-successful after 1 year), but was altered for steam traction and extended numerous times, some made by local companies, until 124 miles were covered. Steam locomotives were rented from the Great Western, and the railway passed to that company in 1878.
Original Capital £1,100,000 in 22,000 Shares of £50 each. Loans of £336,500. Total capital authorised by 1850 £2,025,000 and £600,000 (approx.) in loans.
