York and North Midland Railway Company
Incorporated in 1836.
A broad gauge (4ft 9in) line from York to Darlington where it would join the Great North of England line, also joining the North Midland line on its route. It opened in 1840, took over the Leeds and Selby, and the Whitby and Pickering lines and extended its own to Scarbough. The company passed to the North Eastern Railway in 1854.
Capital £4,956,250 in shares for the E&W Yorkshire amalgamation, £60,000 for the Victoria Dock and £70,000 for the Canal purchases.
