A standard gauge line between Johnstone and Port Glasgow, of which the section between Johnstone and Bridge of Weir was built by the Bridge of Weir Railway Company (1862). The remaining lines were built by the Greenock and Ayrshire Railway company, and the original company had been sold to the Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock and Ayr Railway in 1847.
