Galena & Chicago Union Rail Road Co.
The first railroad constructed out of Chicago, chartered 16th January 1836, to connect the city with the lead mines at Galena. “The Pioneer,” the first locomotive, arrived at Chicago on 10th October 1848. In 1850, the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad was completed as far as Elgin. Consolidated with the Chicago and North Western Railway in 1864.
