Description
Sidney Dillon (1812-1892) constructed numerous US railroads and was one of the principal contractors for the Union Pacific. He took part in the laying of the last rail of the First Transcontinental Railroad in 1869, receiving one of the ceremonial silver spikes used to complete the project. He was involved in the Crédit Mobilier of America scandal. For many years, he was President of the Union Pacific Railroad and an important business partner of Jay Gould.
