Bank of Charleston
Incorporated by Charter 17th December 1834, its business was formerly the South Carolina branch of the Second Bank of the United States which lost its charter in the same year.
Capital $2,000,000, rising to $4,000,000 in the 1840’s. Financed the new Confederate Government after ceding from the Union and lost most of its capital during the Civil War that followed. Converted to a National Bank in 1872/73 when the capital was reduced to only $600,000. By 1879 reduced further to $200,000.
