Oregon Improvement Company
Founded by Henry Villard, to operate steamship lines in the Pacific Northwest, Washington, Oregon and California. Purchased the Seattle & Walla Walla Railroad Co., and the Seattle Coal & Transportation Co. in 1880. Elijah Smith, 1840-1912 and Prosper W. Smith, 1842-1909, acquired control from Villard in 1884 from their base in New Bedford, Mass. Purchased by the Pacific Coast Company in 1896.
